Clio-area dispensary to start selling recreational marijuana

THETFORD TOWNSHIP, MI — It’s always 4:20 at Freddie’s.

Co-owner Barry Goodman took the batteries out of the provisioning center’s clock so it always reads the time traditionally set aside for a weed break.

A ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, will kick off the sale of recreational marijuana at the store. The celebration will continue throughout the day until 10 p.m. Customers will receive a free pre-rolled marijuana cigarette and their choice of a hat or T-shirt. There will be music, food, drinks and video games as well.

In August of 2019, co-owners Nicole and Barry Goodman opened Freddie’s at 10092 N Dort Highway, as a medical marijuana dispensary.

While the township has yet to approve a recreational marijuana ordinance, an exception was made for Freddie’s so the business could apply for licensing from the the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Thetford Township Trustee Eric Gunnels said.

Elite Wellness was also able to apply for a recreational license through the state.

“This is a positive addition to the community,” Gunnels said.

Freddie’s received licensing from the state for provisioning, growing and processing, with plans to eventually grow its own unique marijuana line, Nicole Goodman said.

Eventually, the business also plans to deliver. As it expands into recreational, the owners were able to hire 17 more local employees, expanding the staff from six to 23.

“This is just a dream come true,” Goodman said.

Nicole Goodman’s father is the namesake of the provisioning center. Freddie died six years ago, she said, but left a legacy of spreading joy to those close to him.

“This is a lifestyle that he embraced himself with marijuana and I want to carry that lifestyle and that experience to others,” she said.

Customer service will be what keeps people coming back to Freddie’s, Barry Goodman said.

“You’re one of a kind,” he said. “No two fingerprints are the same from one person to the next and that’s how we’ll treat you here.

A full menu of Freddie’s products is updated regularly and available online. People can also place an order online so it will be ready for pickup at the shop.
